My first official blog post here at Pacific Yoga Fitness. I am so excited to start on this journey with all of you. Before we jump in to yoga retreats and an online yoga platform, I wanted to share some of my favorite things about yoga. Today, I thought it would be a great start to share 5 Interesting Facts About Yoga.
Yoga has been around for centuries and the true meaning of yoga is very different than what we practice in the west. What most of us know and love as yoga is just one small piece to a much bigger picture. Yoga when practiced regularly can change your life not just physically, but also mentally. When you take these small pieces and incorporate them into your every day life you can learn to cope with anxiety, depression, and physical pain. It really can change your overall well-being. So, let’s get to it.
5 Interesting Facts About Yoga

- Yoga is over 5,000 years old. Tracing back to India the word yoga was first mentioned in old Vedic texts.
- The word ‘yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit language and literally means ‘to yolk’ or ‘union’.
- The sound ‘OM’ is said to be the collective sound of the universe, the primordial sound. It is believed to be true essence of supreme consciousness.
- Yoga became an official olympic sport in 2016.
- Asana or your physical practice is only one of the 8 limbs of yoga. To be a true yoga practitioner you must practice and follow all 8 limbs. These 8 limbs include.
- Yamas – Self-restraint
- Niyamas – Observances
- Asana – Physical practice
- Pranayama – Breath practice
- Prathyahara – Withdrawl of senses
- Dharana – Concentration
- Dhyana – Meditation
- Samadhi – Union
